Lignite Market Size in the Middle East
The Middle Eastern lignite market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, declining by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East
In 2022, overseas shipments of lignites decreased by -12.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 94%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lignite exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 124% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Turkey dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2022. Iran (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -20.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iran (+15.5%) and Lebanon (+12.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +15.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Iran and Lebanon increased by +2.6 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest lignite supplier in the Middle East, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lebanon ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.
In Turkey, lignite exports contracted by an average annual rate of -12.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lebanon (+12.7% per year) and Iran (+6.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, rising by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 110% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Lignite Imports
Imports in the Middle East
In 2022, overseas purchases of lignites decreased by -16.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 238% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lignite imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports faced a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 254% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Syrian Arab Republic prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 77% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons) and Oman (X tons), together mixing up a 14% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Syrian Arab Republic increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Israel (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Oman (-7.5%) and the United Arab Emirates (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Syrian Arab Republic (+43 p.p.) and Israel (+5.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Oman and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -2.8% and -3.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Oman ($X), Syrian Arab Republic ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 82% of total imports. These countries were followed by Israel, which accounted for a further 3.6%.
Israel, with a CAGR of +5.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 53% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
