Over the period under review, exports recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 47%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, lucerne meal and pellets exports shrank to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Oman dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 79% of total exports in 2021. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 9.6% share, followed by Iran (6%). The United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Oman increased at an average annual rate of +11.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkey (+47.2%), the United Arab Emirates (+9.9%) and Iran (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +47.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Turkey (+8.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Oman ($X) remains the largest lucerne meal and pellets supplier in the Middle East, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Iran, with a 6.8% share.

In Oman, lucerne meal and pellets exports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+52.4% per year) and Iran (+16.8% per year).

Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. Lebanon (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +39.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest lucerne meal and pellets importing markets in the Middle East were Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Qatar ($X), together accounting for 77% of total imports. These countries were followed by Jordan, Lebanon, Oman and Kuwait, which together accounted for a further 21%.

Jordan, with a CAGR of +34.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
