The Middle Eastern preserved mackerel market fell slightly to $X in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a slight downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of mackerel (prepared or preserved) were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, exports saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 169%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved mackerel exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 204% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Oman (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Yemen (X tons), together finishing at 85% of total export. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), making up an 8.6% share of total exports. Lebanon (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Lebanon (with a CAGR of +54.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) emerged as the largest preserved mackerel supplier in the Middle East, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Yemen ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 16% share.

In Saudi Arabia, preserved mackerel exports expanded at an average annual rate of +31.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Yemen (+27.8% per year) and Oman (-5.5% per year).

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, waning by -6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 44%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of mackerel (prepared or preserved) increased by 39% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.7% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved mackerel imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +70.7% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Yemen dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 86% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), committing a 5.1% share of total imports. The following importers - Israel (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Palestine (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.6% share of total imports.

Yemen was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mackerel (prepared or preserved) imports, with a CAGR of +24.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Qatar (+3.2%), Israel (+2.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Palestine (-8.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Yemen increased by +70 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Yemen ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mackerel (prepared or preserved) in the Middle East, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 5% share of total imports. It was followed by Israel, with a 4.1% share.

In Yemen, preserved mackerel imports expanded at an average annual rate of +21.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+3.7% per year) and Israel (+5.1% per year).

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight descent.
