Malt Market Size in the Middle East

The Middle Eastern malt market expanded to $X in 2021, growing by 3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Malt Production in the Middle East

In value terms, malt production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Malt Exports

Exports in the Middle East

In 2021, approx. X tons of malt (not roasted) were exported in the Middle East; increasing by 48% on 2020 figures. In general, exports recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 348%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, malt exports declined slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 398% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Lebanon was the major exporter of malt (not roasted) in the Middle East, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 77% of total exports in 2021. Israel (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (4.5%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to malt exports from Lebanon stood at +14.7%. At the same time, Israel (+103.7%) and the United Arab Emirates (+17.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +103.7% from 2012-2021. Israel (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Lebanon saw its share reduced by -17.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Lebanon ($X) remains the largest malt supplier in the Middle East, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Lebanon totaled +4.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (+98.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+13.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -32.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 135% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (-2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2021, overseas purchases of malt (not roasted) were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 92% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Turkey was the key importer of malt (not roasted) in the Middle East, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 79% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), achieving a 15% share of total imports. The following importers - Lebanon (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) - each finished at a 3.6% share of total imports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the malt (not roasted) imports, with a CAGR of +63.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Syrian Arab Republic (+57.2%) and Israel (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Lebanon experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Turkey (+74 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Lebanon and Israel saw its share reduced by -8.8% and -50.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported malt (not roasted) in the Middle East, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey stood at +57.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (+0.7% per year) and Lebanon (-2.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) and Lebanon ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) and Israel ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
