As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, shipments abroad of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences decreased by -14.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 250% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports expanded to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 186% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) dominates exports structure, together constituting 93% of total exports. The following exporters - Oman (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) - together made up 4.9% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Oman (with a CAGR of +20.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) emerged as the largest manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences supplier in the Middle East, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +13.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+18.2% per year) and Oman (+7.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2021, overseas purchases of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Turkey represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 58% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together generating a 31% share of total imports. Jordan (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Palestine (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Palestine (+30.5%), Lebanon (+23.8%), Iran (+10.9%), Jordan (+9.3%) and the United Arab Emirates (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Palestine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +30.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-24.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Jordan and Palestine increased by +11, +9.3, +5.6, +1.7 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Iran ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 85% of total imports. These countries were followed by Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Palestine, which together accounted for a further 8.8%.

Among the main importing countries, Palestine, with a CAGR of +25.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Palestine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
