Mate Market Size in the Middle East
In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in the Middle Eastern mate market, when its value increased by 64% to $X. In general, consumption, however, recorded a slight descent. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Mate Production in the Middle East
In value terms, mate production rose sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 107%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Israel (X tons) remains the largest mate producing country in the Middle East, accounting for 73% of total volume. Moreover, mate production in Israel exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Israel stood at +269.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the United Arab Emirates (+1.0% per year) and Palestine (+10.6% per year).
Mate Exports
Exports in the Middle East
In 2022, exports of mate in the Middle East amounted to X tons, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 226% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mate exports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 194% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Syrian Arab Republic dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2022. Lebanon (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Syrian Arab Republic was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mate exports, with a CAGR of +69.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lebanon (+25.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Syrian Arab Republic (+87 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Lebanon saw its share reduced by -1.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Syrian Arab Republic ($X) remains the largest mate supplier in the Middle East, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lebanon ($X), with a 2.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Syrian Arab Republic stood at +69.1%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -6.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mate export price increased by +24.7% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton), while Lebanon amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+3.7%).
Mate Imports
Imports in the Middle East
Mate imports soared to X tons in 2022, picking up by 67% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mate imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Syrian Arab Republic prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 92% of total imports in 2022. Turkey (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
Syrian Arab Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of mate. At the same time, Turkey (+22.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +22.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lebanon (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+3.3 p.p.) and Syrian Arab Republic (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Lebanon saw its share reduced by -3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Syrian Arab Republic ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mate in the Middle East, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Syrian Arab Republic was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+26.1% per year) and Lebanon (-9.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 22%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
