Market Size for Meat of Camels and Other Animals in the Middle East
The Middle Eastern market for meat of camels and other animals declined to $X in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. The total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +1.4% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Production of Meat of Camels and Other Animals in the Middle East
In value terms, camel and other animal meat production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +2.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of camel and other animal meat production was Saudi Arabia (X tons), comprising approx. 60% of total volume. Moreover, camel and other animal meat production in Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Oman (X tons), with an 8.8% share.
In Saudi Arabia, camel and other animal meat production increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the United Arab Emirates (+3.6% per year) and Oman (+7.9% per year).
The average camel and other animal meat yield dropped to X kg per head in 2022, waning by -5.1% compared with the previous year's figure. The yield indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, camel and other animal meat yield increased by +98.3% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 41%. Over the period under review, the camel and other animal meat yield hit record highs at X kg per head in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for camel and other animal meat production in the Middle East expanded modestly to X heads, with an increase of 2.1% compared with 2021. Overall, the number of producing animals, however, saw a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 3.5%. Over the period under review, this number hit record highs at X heads in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, producing animals stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East
In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of meat of camels and other animals, when their volume decreased by -12.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 193% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, camel and other animal meat exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 117% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 82% of total exports in 2022. Oman (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 9.5% share, followed by Turkey (5.4%). Kuwait (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the meat of camels and other animals exports, with a CAGR of +35.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+18.4%) and Kuwait (+12.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Turkey (-6.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+78 p.p.) and Oman (+7.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Turkey (-5.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest camel and other animal meat supplier in the Middle East, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 7.4% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, camel and other animal meat exports expanded at an average annual rate of +33.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (-1.4% per year) and Oman (+19.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 62% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Meat of Camels and Other Animals
Imports in the Middle East
In 2022, approx. X tons of meat of camels and other animals were imported in the Middle East; with an increase of 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 85%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Oman (X tons) dominates imports structure, together committing 88% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Yemen (X tons), mixing up a 6.9% share of total imports. Qatar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +40.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Oman ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported meat of camels and other animals in the Middle East, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Yemen, with a 5.3% share.
In Oman, camel and other animal meat imports expanded at an average annual rate of +36.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+25.9% per year) and Yemen (+7.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -30.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 95%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
