Millet Market Size in the Middle East

In 2022, the Middle Eastern millet market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Millet Production in the Middle East

In value terms, millet production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Yemen (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together comprising 74% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +19.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average millet yield skyrocketed to X kg per ha in 2022, growing by 29% compared with 2021. In general, the yield, however, showed a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 30%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the millet yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of millet production in the Middle East expanded sharply to X ha, growing by 7.4% on the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 7.8%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, shipments abroad of millet increased by 12% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 756%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, millet exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 916%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together constituting a 19% share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the millet exports, with a CAGR of +75.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iran (+55.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (+16.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Yemen experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Turkey (+76 p.p.) and Iran (+4.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates and Yemen saw its share reduced by -15.8% and -65.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest millet supplier in the Middle East, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Yemen, with a 9.1% share.

In Turkey, millet exports expanded at an average annual rate of +63.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+27.0% per year) and Yemen (+9.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -12.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, millet export price decreased by -17.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Millet Imports

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, supplies from abroad of millet decreased by -10.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 129% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, millet imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 83%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of millet, namely the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Iraq, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Oman (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 5.5% share, followed by Yemen (4.9%) and Kuwait (4.8%). Qatar (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of +39.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest millet importing markets in the Middle East were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Iraq ($X), together comprising 66% of total imports.

Iraq, with a CAGR of +45.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 20% against the previous year. Import price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Oman ($X per ton) and Qatar ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) and Iraq ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
