As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, nails and tacks imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. Turkey was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 45% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Israel (10%), Iran (5%), Jordan (4.8%) and Iraq (4.6%). Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -3.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kuwait (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +4.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Israel (-1.2%), Iraq (-2.0%), the United Arab Emirates (-3.4%), Jordan (-3.8%) and Iran (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+7.8 p.p.), Israel (+3.3 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+2.8 p.p.) and Kuwait (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Iran (-5.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Israel ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 75% share of total imports. Iran, Jordan, Iraq and Kuwait lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +2.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 12%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
