For the fifth consecutive year, the Middle East recorded growth in shipments abroad of nuts (prepared or preserved), which increased by 16% to X tons in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, nuts (prepared or preserved) exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 19%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Turkey dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 84% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons), comprising a 5.5% share of total exports. Lebanon (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to nuts (prepared or preserved) exports from Turkey stood at +3.9%. At the same time, Syrian Arab Republic (+15.6%), Iran (+14.5%) and Israel (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Syrian Arab Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +15.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Lebanon (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Iran increased by +3.1 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest nuts (prepared or preserved) supplier in the Middle East, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with a 3.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 2.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey stood at +3.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (+6.9% per year) and Lebanon (-0.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -2.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the Middle East
In 2021, overseas purchases of nuts (prepared or preserved) decreased by -0.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, nuts (prepared or preserved) imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of nuts (prepared or preserved) imports in 2021 were the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Iraq (X tons), together accounting for 53% of total import. Israel (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.5% share, followed by Kuwait (6.3%), Yemen (4.9%) and Qatar (4.8%). Oman (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Bahrain (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Yemen (with a CAGR of +36.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Iraq ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 53% of total imports. Israel, Kuwait, Turkey, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Yemen, Jordan, Syrian Arab Republic and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.
Among the main importing countries, Yemen, with a CAGR of +31.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 7.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 37%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
