Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, onion and shallot exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed temperate growth. For the fourth consecutive year, the Middle East recorded decline in overseas purchases of onions and shallots, which decreased by -30.2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports showed a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, onion and shallot imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 54%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The United Arab Emirates was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 45% of total imports. Kuwait (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Oman (11%), Iraq (9.8%) and Bahrain (6.4%). The following importers - Qatar (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - together made up 6.5% of total imports.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kuwait (+9.9%), Israel (+9.2%) and Oman (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +9.9% from 2012-2022. Bahrain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Iraq (-2.0%) and Qatar (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain and Israel increased by +18, +12, +4.4, +1.9 and +1.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported onions and shallots in the Middle East, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kuwait ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at +7.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kuwait (+10.8% per year) and Oman (+2.8% per year).
