The Middle Eastern organic surface active agent market fell to $X in 2021, waning by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Production of Organic Surface Active Agents in the Middle East

In value terms, organic surface active agent production dropped modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Organic surface active agent exports soared to X tons in 2021, increasing by 34% compared with 2020. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, organic surface active agent exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +65.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the largest exporters of organic surface active agents in the Middle East, together committing 57% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), Israel (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons), together comprising a 41% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bahrain (with a CAGR of +64.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 72% of total exports. Israel, Jordan, Bahrain and Iran lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

Bahrain, with a CAGR of +57.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of organic surface active agents increased by 2.2% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, organic surface active agent imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Turkey was the major importer of organic surface active agents in the Middle East, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 37% of total imports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Jordan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 41% share of total imports. The following importers - Iraq (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Iran (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Jordan (+18.2%), Iraq (+9.5%), Lebanon (+7.7%), the United Arab Emirates (+7.4%) and Israel (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +18.2% from 2012-2021. Kuwait and Saudi Arabia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Syrian Arab Republic (-1.0%), Iran (-1.6%), Oman (-2.0%) and Yemen (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Iraq increased by +4.3, +4.1 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest organic surface active agent importing markets in the Middle East were Turkey ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together comprising 65% of total imports. Israel, Jordan, Iran, Kuwait, Iraq, Syrian Arab Republic, Lebanon, Yemen and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Among the main importing countries, Jordan, with a CAGR of +16.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, growing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
