As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) was the largest exporter of organic surface-active products for washing the skin, comprising 55% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Israel (X tons), together creating a 38% share of total exports. The following exporters - Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up 4.9% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to skin organic surface-active products exports from Turkey stood at +3.4%. At the same time, Oman (+15.7%), the United Arab Emirates (+12.8%), Bahrain (+12.2%) and Israel (+9.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +15.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+10 p.p.), Bahrain (+4.4 p.p.) and Israel (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Turkey and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -7.9% and -9.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Bahrain ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 78% share of total exports.

Bahrain, with a CAGR of +13.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -6.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, skin organic surface-active products export price increased by +71.1% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of organic surface-active products for washing the skin decreased by -10.2% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 34%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, skin organic surface-active products imports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented roughly 48% of total imports in 2021. Israel (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Turkey (11%), Kuwait (7.4%), Iraq (6.3%) and Qatar (4.8%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Iraq (with a CAGR of +24.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Kuwait ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 64% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Turkey, Qatar, Israel and Iraq, which together accounted for a further 24%.

Iraq, with a CAGR of +20.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+12.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
