In 2022, the Middle Eastern piper pepper market decreased by -35.9% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a mild expansion. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the largest exporter of piper pepper, committing 53% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by Iran (9%). Oman (X tons), Palestine (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to piper pepper exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at +11.1%. At the same time, Iran (+32.8%), Turkey (+31.8%), Syrian Arab Republic (+21.1%), Palestine (+12.1%) and Oman (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +32.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+21 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+16 p.p.), Iran (+7.9 p.p.) and Syrian Arab Republic (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -2.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Palestine ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 85% of total exports.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +24.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+11.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, supplies from abroad of piper pepper decreased by -31.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +70.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, piper pepper imports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 126% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the key importer of piper pepper in the Middle East, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Iraq (X tons), together constituting a 25% share of total imports. The following importers - Iran (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - together made up 7.4% of total imports.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iraq (+44.8%), Yemen (+16.5%), Turkey (+6.5%) and Kuwait (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +44.8% from 2012-2022. Israel experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Iran (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Iraq and Turkey increased by +18, +5.4, +5.1 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported piper pepper in the Middle East, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Yemen, with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+11.0% per year) and Yemen (+19.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -6.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 44%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
