Pineapple Market Size in the Middle East
The Middle Eastern pineapple market was estimated at $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Pineapple Production in the Middle East
In value terms, pineapple production rose remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 616%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Israel (X tons) remains the largest pineapple producing country in the Middle East, accounting for 99.9% of total volume.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Israel stood at +46.6%.
The average pineapple yield rose rapidly to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by 7.8% on 2021. Overall, the yield showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 573% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the pineapple yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The pineapple harvested area dropped rapidly to X ha in 2022, waning by -17.1% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
Pineapple Exports
Exports in the Middle East
In 2022, shipments abroad of pineapples decreased by -2.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 70%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pineapple exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 180%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the major exporter of pineapples, making up 41% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Saudi Arabia (22%) and Oman (6.9%). Israel (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +42.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest pineapple supplier in the Middle East, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at +5.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+25.9% per year) and Turkey (+39.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, falling by -12.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 90%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pineapple Imports
Imports in the Middle East
In 2022, approx. X tons of pineapples were imported in the Middle East; dropping by -5.5% on 2021. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +22.3% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 36%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, pineapple imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 28%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the largest importer of pineapples, achieving 34% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Israel (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Yemen (X tons), together making up a 51% share of total imports. Qatar (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pineapple imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at +11.2%. At the same time, Israel (+49.1%), Iran (+19.1%), Qatar (+7.4%), Turkey (+3.8%), Yemen (+3.0%) and Saudi Arabia (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +49.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Iran increased by +12, +8.1 and +3.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Israel ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 63% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Israel, with a CAGR of +28.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
