In value terms, plastic container exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) represented the major exporter of plastic containers, creating 44% of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Oman (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 52% share of total exports. Iran (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+21.9%), Iran (+6.9%), Israel (+5.8%) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +21.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey, Oman, Israel and the United Arab Emirates increased by +32, +5.3, +5.2 and +4.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) emerged as the largest plastic container supplier in the Middle East, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 14% share.

In Turkey, plastic container exports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (+6.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+5.3% per year).

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) represented roughly 57% of total imports in 2021. Israel (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.4% share, followed by Bahrain (6.8%), Iraq (5.9%), Yemen (5.6%) and Kuwait (5.3%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Yemen (with a CAGR of +20.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic container importing markets in the Middle East were Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Israel ($X), with a combined 58% share of total imports. Oman, Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain and Yemen lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

Yemen, with a CAGR of +21.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -3% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
