Plastic Bag Market Size in the Middle East

The Middle Eastern plastic bag market contracted to $X in 2022, reducing by -6.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -25.9% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

After five years of growth, overseas shipments of plastic sacks and bags decreased by -0.3% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 22%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, leveling off in the following year.

In value terms, plastic bag exports rose to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +117.4% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 55% of total exports. Iran (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Palestine (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 39% share of total exports. Israel (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic bag exports from Turkey stood at +10.6%. At the same time, Iran (+25.8%), Saudi Arabia (+17.7%), Palestine (+8.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +25.8% from 2012-2022. Israel experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Iran (+16 p.p.), Turkey (+6.9 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates and Israel saw its share reduced by -1.9% and -5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest plastic bag supplier in the Middle East, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iran ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Israel, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey totaled +8.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (+23.5% per year) and Israel (+0.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 2.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 2.9%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of plastic sacks and bags were imported in the Middle East; which is down by -3.1% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +7.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 28%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Saudi Arabia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Israel (X tons) represented roughly 53% of total imports in 2022. Iraq (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Turkey (7.8%), Oman (6.4%) and Kuwait (5.5%).

In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, rising by 1.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 9.6%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
