Playing Cards Market Size in the Middle East

After four years of growth, the Middle Eastern playing cards market decreased by -10.7% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +69.2% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

The total production indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. In 2022, overseas shipments of playing cards increased by 63% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 309%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, playing cards exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 136% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Turkey was the main exporter of playing cards in the Middle East, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 62% of total exports in 2022. Israel (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 32% share of total exports. The following exporters - Oman (X tons) and Iran (X tons) - each recorded a 4.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to playing cards exports from Turkey stood at +20.8%. At the same time, Israel (+51.7%), Oman (+34.5%) and Iran (+19.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +51.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+32 p.p.), Israel (+26 p.p.) and Oman (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -55.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest playing cards supplying countries in the Middle East were Israel ($X), Turkey ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together accounting for 92% of total exports.

Israel, with a CAGR of +56.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 8.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 179% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, overseas purchases of playing cards decreased by -41.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 131%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, playing cards imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +60.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of playing cards imports in 2022 were the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Israel (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Iraq (X tons), together finishing at 68% of total import. Kuwait (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.7% share, followed by Turkey (5.2%), Oman (5%) and Iran (4.5%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Iraq (with a CAGR of +17.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Israel ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Turkey ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 72% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Israel, with a CAGR of +18.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 40% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 44%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
