Plum And Sloe Market Size in the Middle East

The Middle Eastern plum and sloe market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, declining by -3.5% against the previous year. Exports in the Middle East

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of plums and sloes decreased by -0.6% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 135% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plum and sloe exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 95% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) was the largest exporter of plums and sloes, comprising 66% of total exports. Lebanon (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Syrian Arab Republic (9.6%). Iran (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plum and sloe exports from Turkey stood at +6.4%. At the same time, Iran (+34.3%), the United Arab Emirates (+17.7%), Lebanon (+7.1%) and Syrian Arab Republic (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +34.3% from 2012-2022. Turkey (+5.2 p.p.), Iran (+2.9 p.p.) and Lebanon (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Syrian Arab Republic saw its share reduced by -2.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest plum and sloe supplier in the Middle East, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lebanon ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Syrian Arab Republic, with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey amounted to +5.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lebanon (+14.3% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+7.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -21.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 45%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, plum and sloe imports in the Middle East fell slightly to X tons, waning by -5% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plum and sloe imports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +32.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 61%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Iraq (X tons), distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Oman (X tons) represented the main importers of plums and sloes, together comprising 89% of total imports. Qatar (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +22.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Iraq ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 79% of total imports. Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Qatar, with a CAGR of +28.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -13.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 41%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
