For the third consecutive year, the Middle Eastern polystyrene market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 18% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Iran (with a CAGR of +49.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest polystyrene supplying countries in the Middle East were Turkey ($X), Iran ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 94% share of total exports.

After six years of decline, overseas purchases of polystyrene increased by 13% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a deep slump. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, polystyrene imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) represented the major importer of polystyrene, constituting 41% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons), together committing a 42% share of total imports. Kuwait (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
