Potato Chips Market Size in the Middle East

The Middle Eastern potato chips market contracted to $X in 2022, dropping by -5.5% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of potato chips increased by 2.9% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato chips exports rose to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 66%. Turkey was the largest exporter of potato chips in the Middle East, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 31% of total exports in 2022. Lebanon (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Jordan (13%), Saudi Arabia (13%), Iran (11%), the United Arab Emirates (9.4%) and Palestine (4.6%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to potato chips exports from Turkey stood at +6.2%. At the same time, Jordan (+79.3%), Palestine (+64.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+13.8%), Lebanon (+9.3%) and Saudi Arabia (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +79.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Iran (-13.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Jordan (+13 p.p.), Turkey (+10 p.p.), Lebanon (+6.8 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+6.2 p.p.), Palestine (+4.5 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Iran saw its share reduced by -47.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest potato chips supplying countries in the Middle East were Turkey ($X), Jordan ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), together comprising 62% of total exports.

Jordan, with a CAGR of +82.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of potato chips was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -22.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato chips imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the key importer of potato chips in the Middle East, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 34% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Palestine (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons), together constituting a 49% share of total imports. Qatar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Jordan (with a CAGR of +133.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported potato chips in the Middle East, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Palestine ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 7.5% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, potato chips imports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Palestine (+13.9% per year) and Kuwait (+14.2% per year).

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -7.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
