Over the period under review, exports showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 108%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved swine meat exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 54% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Bahrain (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together mixing up a 43% share of total exports. Iran (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved swine meat exports from Turkey stood at +13.7%. At the same time, Bahrain (+26.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +26.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-5.1%), the United Arab Emirates (-23.8%) and Iran (-31.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+54 p.p.), Bahrain (+15 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+4.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Iran and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -24.3% and -49.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest preserved swine meat supplier in the Middle East, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahrain, with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey stood at +8.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-13.7% per year) and Bahrain (+18.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of prepared or preserved hams and cuts of swine meat were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Bahrain (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Qatar, with a CAGR of +29.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
