The Middle Eastern primary cell and battery market expanded significantly to $X in 2022, increasing by 6.6% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +39.6% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, primary cell and battery production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 63%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, shipments abroad of primary cells and batteries was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports recorded a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 104%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, primary cell and battery exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X units, which accounted for 47% of total exports. Israel (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the United Arab Emirates (X units), Turkey (X units) and Oman (X units). All these countries together held approx. 50% share of total exports.

Saudi Arabia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the primary cells and batteries exports, with a CAGR of +19.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+10.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-4.3%) and Israel (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Saudi Arabia (+37 p.p.) and Oman (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Turkey (-3.4 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (-12.8 p.p.) and Israel (-17.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Israel ($X) remains the largest primary cell and battery supplier in the Middle East, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with an 8.1% share.

In Israel, primary cell and battery exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+4.2% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-0.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -5.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per unit), while Turkey ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, purchases abroad of primary cells and batteries decreased by -1.3% to X units for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, primary cell and battery imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of primary cells and batteries, namely the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Yemen and Iraq, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Iran (X units), constituting an 8.9% share of total imports. Israel (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Israel (with a CAGR of +12.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Israel ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 60% share of total imports. Iraq, Iran and Yemen lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +7.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per unit, falling by -5.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, primary cell and battery import price increased by +3.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per unit), while Yemen (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
