Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, primary cells and primary batteries exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia represented the major exporter of primary cells and primary batteries in the Middle East, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was near 45% of total exports in 2022. Israel (X units) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (15%), Turkey (13%) and Oman (5.4%). Bahrain (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to primary cells and primary batteries exports from Saudi Arabia stood at +44.3%. At the same time, Bahrain (+47.6%) and Oman (+10.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +47.6% from 2012-2022. Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-2.9%) and Israel (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Saudi Arabia (+43 p.p.), Oman (+2.3 p.p.) and Bahrain (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Turkey (-7.4 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (-16.7 p.p.) and Israel (-23.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Israel ($X) remains the largest primary cells and primary batteries supplier in the Middle East, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with an 8% share.

In Israel, primary cells and primary batteries exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+9.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-0.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 24% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 87%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per unit), while Turkey ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, purchases abroad of primary cells and primary batteries decreased by -0.2% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, primary cells and primary batteries imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of primary cells and primary batteries, namely the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Yemen and Iraq, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Iran (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Israel (X units). All these countries together held approx. 13% share of total imports. Kuwait (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Israel ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 60% of total imports. Kuwait, Iraq, Iran and Yemen lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Kuwait, with a CAGR of +12.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per unit in 2022, waning by -6.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, primary cells and primary batteries import price increased by +2.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per unit), while Yemen (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
