Sliding Pencil Market Size in the Middle East

The Middle Eastern sliding pencil market shrank dramatically to $X in 2021, which is down by -27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a noticeable downturn. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of propelling or sliding pencils was finally on the rise to reach X units after five years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable slump. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sliding pencil exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Turkey (X units) represented the largest exporter of propelling or sliding pencils, comprising 58% of total exports. Iran (X units) held a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (14%).

Exports from Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -6.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iran (+64.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +64.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-12.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Iran (+27 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Turkey (-7.8 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (-17 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest sliding pencil supplier in the Middle East, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to +2.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-18.4% per year) and Iran (-0.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -13.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per unit), while Iran (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+9.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

For the fourth consecutive year, the Middle East recorded decline in purchases abroad of propelling or sliding pencils, which decreased by -42.9% to X units in 2021. In general, imports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 8.1% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sliding pencil imports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X units) was the main importer of propelling or sliding pencils, comprising 60% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Israel (X units) and Iraq (X units). All these countries together held near 35% share of total imports. Iran (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -8.8% from 2012 to 2021. Israel (-6.2%), the United Arab Emirates (-7.8%), Iraq (-12.2%) and Iran (-23.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+8.5 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+5.2 p.p.) and Israel (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Iran (-10.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per unit), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
