The Middle Eastern market for raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries stood at $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Moreover, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), sixfold.

In Turkey, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Iran (+2.1% per year) and Israel (+0.1% per year).

In 2022, the average raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry yield in the Middle East fell rapidly to X tons per ha, dropping by -30.6% against the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the yield increased by 88%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then fell notably in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries were harvested in the Middle East; picking up by 45% against 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries decreased by -41.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 187%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry exports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 185% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) represented the major exporter of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries, mixing up 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together creating a 22% share of total exports. Iran (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries exports, with a CAGR of +53.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+53.0%) and Iran (+16.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-20.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+72 p.p.), Oman (+13 p.p.) and Iran (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -72.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry supplier in the Middle East, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with an 8.2% share.

In Turkey, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry exports expanded at an average annual rate of +69.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-3.8% per year) and Oman (+92.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the Middle East

For the eleventh consecutive year, the Middle East recorded growth in supplies from abroad of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries, which increased by 2.5% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 54%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry imports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented the major importers of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries in the Middle East, together achieving 61% of total imports. Israel (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Qatar (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 29% share of total imports. Bahrain (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Israel (with a CAGR of +96.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Qatar ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 73% of total imports. Israel, Kuwait, Bahrain and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

Israel, with a CAGR of +96.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and cranberry import price increased by +13.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
