In 2021, the Middle Eastern cows skin market decreased by -22.4% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after seven years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild decrease. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Cows Skin Production in the Middle East

In value terms, cows skin production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 58% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of cows skin production was Iran (X tons), accounting for 33% of total volume. Moreover, cows skin production in Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iraq (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia (X tons), with a 13% share.

In Iran, cows skin production increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iraq (+4.4% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+1.3% per year).

Cows Skin Exports

Exports in the Middle East

Cows skin exports surged to X tons in 2021, picking up by 54% against the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -10.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cows skin exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the largest exporter of raw hides and skins of bovine animals, achieving 47% of total exports. Yemen (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Oman (9.7%), Jordan (7.8%), Israel (6.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (4.8%). Iran (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cows skin exports from Saudi Arabia stood at +34.7%. At the same time, Israel (+42.9%), Oman (+18.4%), Jordan (+6.4%) and the United Arab Emirates (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +42.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Yemen (-6.1%) and Iran (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Saudi Arabia (+43 p.p.), Oman (+6.8 p.p.), Israel (+6.3 p.p.) and Jordan (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Iran and Yemen saw its share reduced by -6.3% and -21.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the largest cows skin supplier in the Middle East, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with an 8.1% share.

In Saudi Arabia, cows skin exports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Israel (+41.5% per year) and Oman (+9.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 30%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (-1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

After four years of decline, supplies from abroad of raw hides and skins of bovine animals increased by 979% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted prominent growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cows skin imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable decline. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 96% of total imports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+25.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +25.0% from 2012-2021. The United Arab Emirates (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw hides and skins of bovine animals in the Middle East, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 1.8% share of total imports.

In Turkey, cows skin imports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.7% over the period from 2012-2021.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -41.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates amounted to $X per ton.
