The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 99% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +9.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 52% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit), while Turkey ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+23.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2021, ball pen refill imports in the Middle East skyrocketed to X units, picking up by 89% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -1.9% against 2019 indices. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ball pen refill imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The following importers - Israel (X units) and Iraq (X units) - each resulted at a 5.7% share of total imports.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the refills for ball-point pens imports, with a CAGR of +21.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iraq (+4.1%) and Israel (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Turkey (-10.1%) and Iran (-15.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+57 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Turkey (-26.9 p.p.) and Iran (-28.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Israel ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 87% of total imports.

Israel, with a CAGR of +11.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -29.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 37%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per unit), while Iran (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
