In 2022, the Middle Eastern refined cotton-seed oil market increased by 0.4% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Refined cotton-seed oil exports contracted significantly to X tons in 2022, declining by -44.4% on 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 478%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, refined cotton-seed oil exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 406% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.

Turkey prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Yemen (X tons) and Iran (X tons) - each finished at a 3.6% share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the refined cotton-seed oil exports, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iran (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Yemen (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+60 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Yemen saw its share reduced by -41.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest refined cotton-seed oil supplier in the Middle East, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iran ($X), with a 1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey stood at +23.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iran (+5.5% per year) and Yemen (-38.9% per year).

In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, supplies from abroad of refined cotton-seed oil was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 47%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, refined cotton-seed oil imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) was the key importer of refined cotton-seed oil in the Middle East, committing 86% of total import. Qatar (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
