For the sixth consecutive year, the Middle East recorded growth in shipments abroad of rusks, toasted bread and similar toasted products, which increased by 4.5% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, rusks and toasted bread exports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Saudi Arabia was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 68% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (5.4%). Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to rusks and toasted bread exports from Saudi Arabia stood at +11.4%. At the same time, Turkey (+17.2%), Kuwait (+17.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (+8.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +17.2% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey increased by +6.3 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the largest rusks and toasted bread supplier in the Middle East, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 5.1% share.
In Saudi Arabia, rusks and toasted bread exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+13.7% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+17.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 8.8%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East
In 2021, purchases abroad of rusks, toasted bread and similar toasted products decreased by -0.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 86%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, rusks and toasted bread imports rose to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates represented the major importer of rusks, toasted bread and similar toasted products in the Middle East, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 48% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Iraq (X tons), together generating a 42% share of total imports. The following importers - Jordan (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.9% share of total imports.
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rusks, toasted bread and similar toasted products imports, with a CAGR of +30.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iraq (+25.1%), Oman (+24.8%), Kuwait (+10.4%), Israel (+6.5%), Saudi Arabia (+6.1%) and Jordan (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Iraq increased by +33, +3.7 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rusks, toasted bread and similar toasted products in the Middle East, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kuwait ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +23.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kuwait (+8.9% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+10.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 26%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
