In 2021, the Middle Eastern saccharin market increased by 25% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 199% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, saccharin exports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 210%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), committing an 8.3% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the saccharin and its salts exports, with a CAGR of +22.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+11.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Israel (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey increased by +49 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 56%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, saccharin imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Turkey dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 84% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Iran (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the saccharin and its salts imports, with a CAGR of +18.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iran (+11.3%) and Iraq (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Israel (-9.3%) and the United Arab Emirates (-11.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+49 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Israel (-11.3 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (-19 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported saccharin and its salts in the Middle East, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 5.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Iran, with a 4.3% share.

In Turkey, saccharin imports increased at an average annual rate of +18.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (-4.2% per year) and Iran (+10.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 1.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
