In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from Iran (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Turkey (X tons), together reaching 92% of total export.

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, surging by 8.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Yemen ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Sheepskin and lambskin imports rose notably to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 13% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. While the share of Syrian Arab Republic (+2.7 p.p.) and Lebanon (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Turkey (-1.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in the Middle East, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Syrian Arab Republic ($X), with a 1.9% share of total imports.

In Turkey, sheepskin and lambskin imports shrank by an average annual rate of -18.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Syrian Arab Republic (-6.0% per year) and Lebanon (-4.7% per year).
