Sparkling Wine Market Size in the Middle East

After four years of growth, the Middle Eastern sparkling wine market decreased by -0.3% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption showed a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the market value increased by 6.5%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sparkling wine production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

For the third year in a row, the Middle East recorded decline in shipments abroad of sparkling wine, which decreased by -50.5% to X litres in 2022. In general, exports saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 47%. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sparkling wine exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 71% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X litres) and Turkey (X litres) prevails in exports structure, together mixing up 76% of total exports. Lebanon (X litres) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 7.1% share, followed by Bahrain (6.4%) and Palestine (4.7%). The following exporters - Israel (X litres) and Iran (X litres) - together made up 5.7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bahrain (with a CAGR of +88.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) emerged as the largest sparkling wine supplier in the Middle East, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 30% share of total exports. It was followed by Iran, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey totaled +37.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-4.4% per year) and Iran (+13.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per litre in 2022, with an increase of 63% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a resilient increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per litre), while Bahrain ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+19.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the Middle East

Sparkling wine imports fell to X litres in 2022, declining by -9.9% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports showed a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 87%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sparkling wine imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +50.0% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X litres) was the largest importer of sparkling wine, making up 73% of total imports. Israel (X litres) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Turkey (X litres). All these countries together held near 22% share of total imports. Oman (X litres) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+21.0%), Israel (+2.7%) and Oman (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +21.0% from 2012-2022. The United Arab Emirates (+33 p.p.), Turkey (+6.4 p.p.) and Israel (+5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sparkling wine in the Middle East, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Israel, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at +4.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+18.1% per year) and Israel (+8.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per litre, leveling off at the previous year. Import price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sparkling wine import price increased by +32.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per litre), while Oman ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
