For the seventh consecutive year, the Middle East recorded growth in overseas shipments of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery, which increased by 1.2% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +67.9% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +70.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Turkey dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), comprising a 7.9% share of total exports. The following exporters - Iran (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) - each reached a 4% share of total exports.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iran (+16.6%), Jordan (+5.3%) and Saudi Arabia (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +16.6% from 2012-2022. Turkey (+17 p.p.) and Iran (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery supplier in the Middle East, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 6.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Jordan, with a 2.6% share.
In Turkey, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+2.8% per year) and Jordan (+8.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports stood at $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Israel (X tons) represented roughly 74% of total imports in 2022. Kuwait (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Oman (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Palestine (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +12.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery importing markets in the Middle East were Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Iraq ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports. Israel, Yemen, Kuwait, Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, Oman, Bahrain, Palestine and Syrian Arab Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.
Among the main importing countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +12.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
