Sunflower Seed Market Size in the Middle East

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 77%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sunflower seed exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) represented the largest exporter of sunflower seed in the Middle East, comprising 95% of total export.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sunflower seed exports, with a CAGR of +11.1% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Turkey (+20 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2022, purchases abroad of sunflower seed increased by 11% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports posted a mild increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sunflower seed imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -0.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Turkey dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 82% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Iraq (X tons), mixing up a 7.2% share of total imports. Iran (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of sunflower seed. At the same time, Iraq (+22.3%) and Iran (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +22.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Iraq increased by +6.1 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sunflower seed in the Middle East, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iraq ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Iran, with a 5.3% share.

In Turkey, sunflower seed imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iraq (+21.9% per year) and Iran (+0.8% per year).
