Tea Market Size in the Middle East

The Middle Eastern tea market reduced to $X in 2022, waning by -6.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Tea Production in the Middle East

In value terms, tea production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, faced a significant curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 214,039,925% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Turkey (X kg) and Qatar (X kg).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of 0.0%).

Tea Exports

Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, the amount of tea exported in the Middle East amounted to X tons, surging by 11% on 2021. Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +52.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tea exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the major exporter of tea, mixing up 70% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by Iran (7.2%) and Jordan (5%). Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Jordan (+29.7%), Turkey (+8.5%) and Saudi Arabia (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +29.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Yemen (-7.6%) and Iran (-10.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+12 p.p.), Turkey (+5.1 p.p.) and Jordan (+4.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Yemen (-3.4 p.p.) and Iran (-18.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest tea supplier in the Middle East, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Jordan ($X), with a 7.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 6.6% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, tea exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Jordan (+38.7% per year) and Turkey (+7.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, the amount of tea imported in the Middle East shrank to X tons, reducing by -6.2% compared with the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 37%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tea imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Iran (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) represented roughly 74% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Yemen (X tons), making up a 6.5% share of total imports. The following importers - Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) - each accounted for a 7.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +7.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Iran ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 62% of total imports. Iraq, Syrian Arab Republic, Yemen and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

Among the main importing countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +4.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 13%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
