Preserved Tuna Market Size in the Middle East

In 2021, the Middle Eastern preserved tuna market decreased by -2.3% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after eight years of growth. The total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -10.6% against 2019 indices. In 2021, shipments abroad of tuna (prepared or preserved) decreased by -8.2% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports saw a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 32%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved tuna exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 35%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Oman (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Iran (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented roughly 91% of total exports in 2021. Jordan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +54.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest preserved tuna supplying countries in the Middle East were Yemen ($X), Oman ($X) and Turkey ($X), with a combined 67% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran and Jordan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Among the main exporting countries, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +59.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 15%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Yemen ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of tuna (prepared or preserved), when their volume decreased by -4.5% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 10%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In value terms, preserved tuna imports contracted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) represented the largest importers of tuna (prepared or preserved) in 2021, accounting for approx. 29% and 26% of total imports, respectively. Israel (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons). All these countries together held near 26% share of total imports. Jordan (X tons) and Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Yemen (with a CAGR of +14.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest preserved tuna importing markets in the Middle East were Saudi Arabia ($X), Yemen ($X) and Israel ($X), with a combined 69% share of total imports.

Yemen, with a CAGR of +11.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Israel ($X per ton) and Jordan ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) and Yemen ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
