In value terms, unbleached sulphate pulp exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 76% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, Turkey (X tons), distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the largest exporters of unbleached sulphate pulp, together generating 100% of total exports.

Imports in the Middle East

Unbleached sulphate pulp imports shrank to X tons in 2022, dropping by -13.3% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 60%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, unbleached sulphate pulp imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 115% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Turkey was the key importer of unbleached sulphate pulp in the Middle East, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 59% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons), together constituting a 36% share of total imports. Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to unbleached sulphate pulp imports into Turkey stood at +9.1%. By contrast, Syrian Arab Republic (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Saudi Arabia (+14 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+7 p.p.), Lebanon (+4 p.p.) and Turkey (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Iran and Syrian Arab Republic saw its share reduced by -5.3% and -6.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported unbleached sulphate pulp in the Middle East, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Iran, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to +13.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+109.7% per year) and Iran (+8.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
