In 2021, the Middle Eastern uncooked pasta market decreased by -5.1% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the sixth year in a row, the Middle East recorded growth in overseas shipments of uncooked pasta, which increased by 73% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, uncooked pasta exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a resilient increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Turkey dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - together made up 5.4% of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the uncooked pasta exports, with a CAGR of +21.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+3.9%) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Turkey (+23 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-5.1 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (-7.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest uncooked pasta supplier in the Middle East, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

In Turkey, uncooked pasta exports expanded at an average annual rate of +18.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+6.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-0.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 7.6%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After four years of growth, purchases abroad of uncooked pasta decreased by -5.1% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +83.5% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 23%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, uncooked pasta imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +55.2% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 28%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Iraq (X tons), distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Oman (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) represented the largest importers of uncooked pasta, together achieving 88% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Iraq (with a CAGR of +25.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest uncooked pasta importing markets in the Middle East were Iraq ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 52% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +33.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, surging by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
