Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

Enamels and glazes exports rose notably to X tons in 2021, picking up by 8.2% on the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 115% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, enamels and glazes exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 81%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 60% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together creating a 35% share of total exports. Israel (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to enamels and glazes exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at +37.7%. At the same time, Iran (+81.0%), Turkey (+26.8%) and Israel (+25.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +81.0% from 2012-2021. In Turkey, enamels and glazes exports increased at an average annual rate of +20.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+23.9% per year) and Israel (+28.0% per year).

Imports in the Middle East

In 2021, enamels and glazes imports in the Middle East rose significantly to X tons, picking up by 8.2% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, enamels and glazes imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +76.4% against 2018 indices. Saudi Arabia represented the major importer of vitrifiable enamels and glazes for ceramics, enamelling or glass in the Middle East, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 51% of total imports in 2021. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (9.2%) and Oman (8.6%). The following importers - Iran (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) - each reached a 6.5% share of total imports.

Imports into Saudi Arabia increased at an average annual rate of +12.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kuwait (+46.8%), Oman (+11.3%) and Turkey (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +46.8% from 2012-2021. The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Iran (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Saudi Arabia (+22 p.p.), Oman (+3.2 p.p.) and Kuwait (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-6.1 p.p.), Turkey (-8.5 p.p.) and Iran (-8.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Turkey ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 82% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Iran, Oman and Kuwait, which together accounted for a further 13%.

Kuwait, with a CAGR of +42.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
