The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -7.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production of hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, shipments abroad of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages increased by 4.9% to X litres, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 15%. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages reached $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the key exporting country with an export of about X litres, which reached 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Lebanon (X litres) and the United Arab Emirates (X litres), together mixing up a 17% share of total exports. Israel (X litres) and Palestine (X litres) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages exports from Turkey stood at +4.1%. At the same time, Israel (+14.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +14.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Palestine (-5.2%), Lebanon (-7.2%) and the United Arab Emirates (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+26 p.p.) and Israel (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Palestine, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -1.5%, -10.8% and -12.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages supplier in the Middle East, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lebanon ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 7.1% share.

In Turkey, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lebanon (-2.8% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-6.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per litre, shrinking by -3.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in the United Arab Emirates ($X per litre) and Israel ($X per litre), while Lebanon ($X per litre) and Palestine ($X per litre) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, supplies from abroad of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages increased by 6.9% to X litres, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 54%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +90.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 58%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the largest importer of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages in the Middle East, with the volume of imports finishing at X litres, which was approx. 38% of total imports in 2022. Israel (X litres) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Turkey (16%), Iraq (14%) and Lebanon (5%). The following importers - Oman (X litres) and Qatar (X litres) - each accounted for a 4.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at +10.1%. At the same time, Oman (+13.7%), Turkey (+11.0%), Israel (+7.4%), Iraq (+4.6%) and Qatar (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +13.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lebanon (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+14 p.p.), Turkey (+6.6 p.p.) and Israel (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Lebanon saw its share reduced by -21.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Israel ($X) and Turkey ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 81% of total imports. These countries were followed by Iraq, Lebanon, Qatar and Oman, which together accounted for a further 15%.

Oman, with a CAGR of +12.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per litre in 2022, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per litre), while Oman ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
