Wallpaper Market Size in the Middle East

In 2021, the Middle Eastern wallpaper market decreased by -2.7% to $X, falling for the fourth consecutive year after six years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, recorded tangible growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Wallpaper Production in the Middle East

In value terms, wallpaper production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2021, shipments abroad of wallpaper and wall coverings increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, exports showed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, wallpaper exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded measured growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) represented the largest exporter of wallpaper and wall coverings, comprising 64% of total exports. Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) took a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (9.3%).

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+18.5%) and Syrian Arab Republic (+16.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +18.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Syrian Arab Republic, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates increased by +16, +15 and +6.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest wallpaper supplier in the Middle East, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to +2.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+31.3% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+8.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 32% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+10.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2021, the amount of wallpaper and wall coverings imported in the Middle East reduced to X tons, with a decrease of -7.8% against the year before. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 40%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wallpaper imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Iran (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the main importers of wallpaper and wall coverings in the Middle East, together amounting to near 62% of total imports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Iraq (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 25% share of total imports. The following importers - Kuwait (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) - together made up 6.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of +13.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest wallpaper importing markets in the Middle East were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Iran ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 73% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +5.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
