In value terms, wheat and meslin flour exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +49.0% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), making up a 7.4% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kuwait (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - each reached a 4.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wheat and meslin flour exports from Turkey stood at +4.5%. At the same time, Oman (+13.8%), Kuwait (+6.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +13.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Oman increased by +4.1 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest wheat and meslin flour supplier in the Middle East, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 5.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 2.9% share.

In 2022, overseas purchases of wheat and meslin flour increased by 0.4% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +2.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wheat and meslin flour imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -6.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Iraq was the key importer of wheat and meslin flour in the Middle East, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 50% of total imports in 2022. Yemen (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Syrian Arab Republic (12%) and the United Arab Emirates (5.2%). Saudi Arabia (X tons), Palestine (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Iraq increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+85.6%), Yemen (+32.6%), Syrian Arab Republic (+22.5%), Palestine (+7.3%), the United Arab Emirates (+5.6%) and Saudi Arabia (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +85.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Yemen, Syrian Arab Republic and Turkey increased by +18, +8.5 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Iraq ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wheat and meslin flour in the Middle East, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Yemen ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Syrian Arab Republic, with an 11% share.
In Iraq, wheat and meslin flour imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Yemen (+29.3% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+19.9% per year).
