In 2022, exports of mobile phones in the Middle East shrank significantly to X units, declining by -44.1% on 2021 figures. In general, exports faced a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 30%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mobile phone exports fell notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 51%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X units) represented the major exporter of mobile phones, creating 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X units) and Turkey (X units), together creating a 16% share of total exports. Bahrain (X units) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mobile phone exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at -15.6%. At the same time, Oman (+70.8%) and Turkey (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +70.8% from 2012-2022. In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest mobile phone supplier in the Middle East, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 2.4% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, mobile phone exports decreased by an average annual rate of -8.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (+98.1% per year) and Turkey (-4.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per unit in 2022, with a decrease of -14.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 44%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per unit), while Turkey ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+16.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East
In 2022, mobile phone imports in the Middle East reduced slightly to X units, waning by -4% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 30%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
In value terms, mobile phone imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +16.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X units) represented the main importer of mobile phones, mixing up 56% of total imports. Iran (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Iraq (X units). All these countries together took approx. 34% share of total imports. The following importers - Israel (X units), Kuwait (X units), Oman (X units) and Turkey (X units) - each recorded a 7.6% share of total imports.
Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iran (+37.6%), Iraq (+5.3%), Oman (+5.1%) and Israel (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +37.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kuwait (-2.2%) and Turkey (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Iran (+19 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kuwait and Turkey saw its share reduced by -1.6% and -6.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mobile phones in the Middle East, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iran ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Iraq, with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +9.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (+28.7% per year) and Iraq (+4.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -15.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
