The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 113%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wood charcoal exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. Turkey represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 58% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Palestine (7%) and Iran (6.3%). The following exporters - Jordan (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) - each finished at a 5.5% share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wood charcoal exports, with a CAGR of +84.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+46.6%), Jordan (+14.5%), the United Arab Emirates (+2.9%) and Oman (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Palestine (-3.5%) and Iran (-15.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey and Saudi Arabia increased by +58 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest wood charcoal supplier in the Middle East, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Palestine, with a 6.9% share.

Wood charcoal imports contracted to X tons in 2021, reducing by -2.2% against 2020 figures. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -13.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood charcoal imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 36% of total imports. Iraq (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Jordan (10%), Turkey (8.3%), Israel (6.8%), Lebanon (6.3%) and the United Arab Emirates (6.3%).

Imports into Saudi Arabia increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iraq (+37.4%), Jordan (+13.2%), the United Arab Emirates (+9.8%) and Israel (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +37.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Lebanon (-1.6%) and Turkey (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Jordan increased by +9.5, +6.1 and +4.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood charcoal in the Middle East, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iraq ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Jordan, with a 9.7% share.
