Cotton Fabric Market Size in the Middle East

In 2021, the Middle Eastern cotton fabric market decreased by -19.9% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cotton fabric production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cotton fabric exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Turkey (X tons) represented roughly 98% of total exports in 2021.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the woven fabrics of cotton exports, with a CAGR of +8.1% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of Turkey (+13 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) also remains the largest cotton fabric supplier in the Middle East.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 1.5% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Turkey.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2021, cotton fabric imports in the Middle East surged to X tons, growing by 16% on 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cotton fabric imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild decrease. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) was the major importer of woven fabrics of cotton, generating 54% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Jordan (9%) and Iran (8.7%). Yemen (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Israel (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of woven fabrics of cotton. At the same time, Yemen (+67.9%), Lebanon (+13.3%), Jordan (+12.9%) and Iran (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Yemen emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +67.9% from 2012-2021. The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Israel (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Jordan, Yemen, Iran and Lebanon increased by +5.6, +3.8, +3.4 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cotton fabric importing markets in the Middle East were Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Jordan ($X), with a combined 74% share of total imports. Iran, Yemen, Israel and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

Yemen, with a CAGR of +73.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, surging by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Yemen (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
