The Middle Eastern wrapping papers market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard exported in the Middle East amounted to X tons, growing by 15% compared with the year before. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, wrapping papers exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +83.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia was the largest exporter of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard in the Middle East, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 53% of total exports in 2021. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 19% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (12%) and Israel (6.4%). Bahrain (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Saudi Arabia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard. At the same time, Bahrain (+41.8%), Syrian Arab Republic (+22.3%) and Israel (+11.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +41.8% from 2012-2021. The United Arab Emirates and Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Lebanon (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Israel (+3.7 p.p.), Bahrain (+3 p.p.) and Syrian Arab Republic (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Turkey saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -1.7% and -2.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the largest wrapping papers supplier in the Middle East, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Saudi Arabia stood at +7.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+0.9% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-0.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, growing by 23% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, wrapping papers imports in the Middle East was estimated at X tons, increasing by 12% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 20%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, wrapping papers imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iraq (+24.1%), the United Arab Emirates (+5.7%) and Jordan (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +24.1% from 2012-2021. Kuwait and Saudi Arabia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Israel (-1.4%), Oman (-2.6%) and Iran (-17.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+16 p.p.), Iraq (+6.2 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Oman (-1.6 p.p.), Israel (-1.8 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (-4.1 p.p.) and Iran (-16.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard in the Middle East, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey totaled +7.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (-2.0% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+5.7% per year).

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
