Yams Market Size in the Middle East

The Middle Eastern yams market expanded significantly to $X in 2022, with an increase of 8.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, yams imports in the Middle East amounted to X tons, increasing by 2.7% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, yams imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

The United Arab Emirates prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 69% of total imports in 2022. Qatar (X tons) took an 8.4% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Oman (7.9%), Kuwait (5.4%) and Bahrain (4.9%). Saudi Arabia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kuwait (+78.6%), Bahrain (+76.3%), Oman (+74.4%), Saudi Arabia (+34.1%) and Qatar (+17.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +78.6% from 2012-2022. Qatar (+8.4 p.p.), Oman (+7.8 p.p.), Kuwait (+5.3 p.p.), Bahrain (+4.9 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -30.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported yams in the Middle East, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with a 9.7% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, yams imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (+15.1% per year) and Oman (+68.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 6.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 22%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
