In 2021, the Moroccan magnetic card market decreased by -39.4% to $X, falling for the fifth consecutive year after five years of growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Mali (X units), Congo (X units) and Madagascar (X units) were the main destinations of magnetic card exports from Morocco, together accounting for 60% of total exports.

From 2015 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +8.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for magnetic card exported from Morocco were Congo ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Madagascar ($X), together accounting for 63% of total exports. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of cards incorporating a magnetic stripe decreased by -29.6% to X units, falling for the fifth consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a sharp decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, magnetic card imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a precipitous decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

China (X units), Saudi Arabia (X units) and the United Arab Emirates (X units) were the main suppliers of magnetic card imports to Morocco, together accounting for 43% of total imports. The UK, Spain, France, Algeria, Italy and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

From 2015 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of -5.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
