Coffee Extract Market Size in Morocco

For the third consecutive year, the Moroccan coffee extract market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 1.7% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the market value increased by 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coffee extract production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 3.7%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Morocco

In 2021, approx. X tons of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates were exported from Morocco; waning by -13.5% on 2020. In general, total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +60.1% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, coffee extract exports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Egypt (X tons) was the main destination for coffee extract exports from Morocco, accounting for a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, coffee extract exports to Egypt exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Algeria (X tons), twofold. Tunisia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Egypt amounted to +23.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Algeria (+3.8% per year) and Tunisia (-8.2% per year).

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Algeria ($X) and Tunisia ($X) were the largest markets for coffee extract exported from Morocco worldwide, with a combined 79% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Malta and Libya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

Among the main countries of destination, Lebanon, with a CAGR of +41.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average coffee extract export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 5.6% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Algeria (-0.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Coffee Extract Imports

Imports into Morocco

For the third year in a row, Morocco recorded growth in supplies from abroad of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, which increased by 17% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, coffee extract imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest coffee extract supplier to Morocco, accounting for a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, coffee extract imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), twofold. Egypt (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany totaled +11.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+19.3% per year) and Egypt (+84.6% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X) were the largest coffee extract suppliers to Morocco, with a combined 71% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Egypt, France, the UK and India, which together accounted for a further 22%.

India, with a CAGR of +168.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average coffee extract import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 4.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 19%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
